Third Eye tells the life story of Lower East Side-based internationally acclaimed street artist and documentarian Clayton Patterson. He was born into a struggling working-class family in Calgary, Canada, in 1948, and as a youth he suffered from a lack of self-confidence. Through changing environments, followed by a series of illuminating experiences in the company of painter/sculptor Elsa Rensaa, they emerged into the vital milieu of the LES art community, becoming part of a new breed of artists and fronrunners of the NYC underground art scene. On Auigst 6/7, 1988, Clayton captured on video the Tompkins Square Park police riot, a long night of police brutality against peaceful protestors and passers-by. His video provided indisputable evidence that the NYPD were responsible for inciting a police riot. By confronting an authoritarian system of control with the use of a consumer video camera, Clayton Patterson introduced a new era of media activism as a form of art. He also earned local and international acclaim for his Clayton-caps, graffiti and tattoo art, publishing, and the yearly series of NYC Acker Awards.
