    A Thousand Machines
A Concise Philosophy of the Machine as Social Movement
    Gerald Raunig
    Translated by Aileen Derieg

In this “concise philosophy of the machine,” Gerald Raunig provides a historical and critical backdrop to a concept proposed forty years ago by the French philosophers Félix Guattari and Gilles Deleuze: the machine, not as a technical device and apparatus, but as a social composition and concatenation. This conception of the machine as an arrangement of technical, bodily, intellectual, and social components subverts the opposition between man and machine, organism and mechanism, individual and community. Drawing from an unusual range of films, literature, and performance—from the role of bicycles in Flann O’Brien’s fiction to Vittorio de Sica’s Neorealist film The Bicycle Thieves, and from Karl Marx’s “Fragment on Machines” to the deus ex machina of Greek drama—Raunig arrives at an enhanced conception of the machine as a social movement, finding its most apt and concrete manifestation in the Euromayday movement,...

    Salvation Army
    Abdellah Taïa
    Translated by Frank Stock
    Introduction by Edmund White

An autobiographical novel by turn naïve and cunning, funny and moving, this most recent work by Moroccan expatriate Abdellah Taïa is a major addition to the new French literature emerging from the North African Arabic diaspora. Salvation Army is a coming-of-age novel that tells the story of Taïa’s life with complete disclosure—from a childhood bound by family order and latent (homo)sexual tensions in the poor city of Salé, through a sexual awakening in Tangier charged by the young writer’s attraction to his eldest brother, to a disappointing arrival in the Western world to study in Geneva in adulthood. In so doing, Salvation Army manages to burn through the author’s first-person singularity to embody the complex mélange of fear and desire projected by Arabs on Western culture.

Recently hailed by his native country’s press as “the first Moroccan to have the courage to publicly assert his difference,”...

    The Joy Engineers
    Two Science-Fiction Novellas
    W. Strawn Douglas

The Black Hole Drivenovella deals with the rescue of a mining colony from pressing volcanic activity and getting these people to a new home while their old one cools off. Captain Hardesty and his first officer, Commander Bowman, must shelve their relationship long enough to save these hard-working people, and their supply of explosive anti-matter that they use for digging out precious ores. This material is intensely coveted by Earth’s corporate front, and is only given by the “ghosts,” a trans-dimensional life form that will only supply this substance to small, independent groups.

The Oracle novella deals with the test of a new mental-illness drug which is in reality an ESP drug being put forward by doctors within the covert intelligence community. Young James McGregor has to steal enough of the drug and get it to the underground and into production so the folks at CIA and their dummy front called Bryce Pharmaceuticals don’t take over the world and turnit into a place where only the government can read minds....

    Dining in Refugee Camps
    The Art of Sahrawi Cooking
    Robin Kahn

Cenando en los Campamentos de Refugiados:
    Un Libro De Cocina Saharaui

A bilingual, collage journal that documents Robin Kahn’s month cooking with the women of the Western Sahara.

As a guest artist selected to participate in ARTifariti 2009, Kahn stayed with Sahrawi families living in refugee camps in Algeria and in the desert of The Free Territories of the Western Sahara. There she created the collages for this publication by combining the sparse materials available locally with photos, recipes, histories and drawings. The result is a 50-page full-color journal that examines the art of Sahrawi food production: how kitchens are improvised, food is procured and prepared, and traditional recipes are innovated from UN rations and international aid. The book is a testament to the daily struggles of Sahrawi women whose role is to provide sustenance, fortitude and comfort inside a compromised society....

    Genocide in the Neighborhood
    Colectivo Situaciones
Translated by Brian Whitener, Daniel Borzutzky, and Fernando Fuentes.

Genocide in the Neighborhood documents the autonomist practice of the escrache, a system of public shaming that emerged in the late 1990s to vindicate the lives of those disappeared under the Argentinean dictatorship and to protest the amnesty granted to perpetrators of the killing. The book is an example of militant research, an investigative method that Colectivo Situaciones has pioneered. Through a series of hypotheses and two sets of interviews, Genocide in the Neighborhood documents the theories, debates, successes, and failures of the escraches, investigates the nature of rebellion, discusses the value of historical and cultural memory to resistance, and suggests decentralized ways to agitate for justice. Think of it as a much needed model of political resistance.

Colectivo Situaciones is a collective of militant researchers based in Buenos Aires. It has participated in numerous grassroots co-research activities with unemployed workers,...
